A mistake in electing Boris Johnson's successor as British prime minister could be fatal and result in the defeat of the ruling Conservative Party in the next election. Elena Ananyeva, head of the Center for British Studies at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, called such consequences of a wrong choice in an interview with Lenta.ru".
She noted that although according to polls among members of the Conservative Party, Defense Minister Ben Wallace is leading, they need to take into account the preferences of voters. "By tradition, it is assumed that the new leader of the party will stay in office for several months, prove himself and call early elections in order to already receive a mandate from voters," Ananyeva said.
According to the political scientist, the Conservatives' main rival, the Labour Party, is already leading in opinion polls. Moreover, the Labor Party may unite with the Liberal Democratic Party in the next parliamentary elections, whenever they take place. This is partly why the Conservatives were slow to remove Johnson from office. However, talking now about the chances of a particular party in hypothetical elections is akin to fortune—telling on coffee grounds, Ananyeva stressed. "Everything will depend on who becomes the leader [of the Conservative Party], whether he can somehow change the situation in the country, even a little, or create the impression that the government and he personally behave honestly," she said.
